Prachuap farmers distressed from falling coconut prices, blame ‘Free Trade’

PRACHUAP KHIRI KHAN: Farmers are demanding the government intervene to curb unchecked cross-border trade, as coconut prices at local markets have fallen to or below the cost of production.

Festive shortage of popular Prachuap durian variety

HUA HIN: The National News Bureau of Thailand reports that local farmers were running out of supplies of durian (Durio zibethinus) in the face of high demand from local tourists visiting the area during the long Mother’s Day weekend.  The “Pa la-ou” variety of durian (ทุเรียนป่าละอู), which is protected under  the Geographical Indicator (GI) national-regional variety registration system, is specifically grown in the northwest region of Prachuap Khiri Khan province and known for its “delicate flesh and small seeds”.

Tri Cove City Dot Com is Born

Happy May 2018! This is effectively the first post of what will be many to come. I’ve been anticipating launching this website for some time, and finally got around to getting the bare bones up today. Having fallen for the charm of Prachuap Khiri Khan provnince’s central district, I’ve finally decided to set up camp here, and in the planning process, have been gathering and collecting important information about this up and coming destination.

I’ve been around Thailand over the years for work and pleasure, and I have little doubt in my decision to choose Prachuap City as my semipermenant base for the coming decade. Anyone who’s passed through here for a long weekend can vouch that this place is truly unique with much potential.

Nicknamed in Thai, “Muang Saam Ao” เมืองสามอ่าว, which translates to “Town of Three Bays”, Prachuap is prime.

Considering the future direction of this region, it was only natural to coin “Tri-Cove City” to describe this up and coming destination for keen weekenders, wanderers, expats and investors alike.

Though the city of Prachuap proper may still appear on the surface to be a sleepy fishing town, it is in my professional view, a “Sleeping Giant” ripe for a major growth spurt. Many factors fuel this potential — the coming high-speed rail, expansion of Hua Hin as an aviation hub, the imminent upgrade of the nearby Dan Singkhon border checkpoint into a permanent international checkpoint….

Will Prachuap be the next Pattaya, Phuket or Hua Hin? Not any time soon, In fact I am confident that in the coming decade years, the tri-cove city will serve as an ideal coastal respite for expats and residents based in the three aforementioned destinations, who need a break from the hustle and bustle. After all, the Tri Cove City represents what those places represented years ago, and can still offer alot of the good of what those cities can no longer. But it won’t remain the same “sleepy town” that many would hope it to be.

Already the provincial district boasts 90,000+ people and domestic and international funds are flowing into this region in increasing sums. And it is thus important to ensure the coming inflows and subsequent growth are sustainable. This in my opinion can be achieved more effectively through ensured transparency and clarity of information flow. As a seasoned and passionate newshound, I’ll plan to cover these factors in depth on this website. Watch this Space!
